(dir. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead)
And we’re back with year two of 31 Days of Horror!
Once again, I’ll mixing up the selection with old favorites, first time
viewings, and new releases this October.
First up we have Justin Benson and Aaaron Moorhead’s
Resolution. The film follows Michael, who travels to a remote cabin to forcibly
save his junkie friend, Chris. The rapport between leads Peter Cilella and
Vinny Curran is genuinely funny, but filled with enough drama and darkness to
prevent the film from becoming a horror-comedy routine. Like any good cabin in
the woods film, seclusion and companionship offer little safety. When mysterious
items begin to show up around the cabin, including burned books, old
photographs, and most alarmingly, recent video footage of Michael and Chris,
the two friends must contend with an ancient force that plans on using their
presumed redemption story for its own end. Resolution feels more like a mystery
than traditional horror films often do, and viewed a certain way, the answer to
Resolution’s central mystery lies in our own fascination with horror.
The setting of the film may be remote but the land is
populated by a cadre of odd characters, and red herrings, all of which suggest
the ancient force at the center of the film could stem from demonology, ghosts,
UFO landings, or ancient tribal rituals. While we do get answers, the film
doesn’t hinge on a left-field twist, rather Benson and Moorhead use the
audience’s familiarity with horror tropes and stories to create their own
modern mythology—one that both surprises and appeals to our need to understand
forces beyond our reach. While meta-horror films and television shows are the
current craze, Resolution manages to be meta without catering to our desire to feel smarter than the characters onscreen.
Scare Factor: 3/5 What Resolution may lack in terms of
jump scares and gore, it makes up for with a genuinely haunting concept, one
that may follow you through each and every horror film you consume this month.
